For homeowners:
How much lawn fertilizer will I need?
If you have decided to make a fertilizer application at the ¾ lb nitrogen rate per 1,000 square feet and your lawn is 5,000 square feet, how much will you need to take care of your entire lawn? It is easy to figure out how much you will need. It all depends on the fertilizer analysis of the product you are using.
Let’s use two common lawn fertilizer products to calculate the amount needed. For this example we will use No-Name Lawn Fertilizer with an analysis of 20-0-0 and Corn Gluten Meal which has an analysis of 10-0-0.
Using the chart below we will need to apply 3¾ lbs of 20-0-0 for each 1,000 sq ft of lawn. For a 5,000 sq ft lawn 18¾ lbs of 20-0-0 will be needed to do the whole job. A 20 lb bag of No-Name Lawn Fertilizer will provide more than you need.
If you chose Corn Gluten Meal, an organic source, with its analysis of 10-0-0 you will need to apply 7½ lbs for each 1,000 sq ft or 37½ lbs to do your whole lawn and supply nitrogen a the ¾ lb rate. If using Corn Gluten Meal you will need less than a 40 lb bag.
