Back to fertilizing your lawn

For homeowners:
Fertilizer application tips
- Do not fertilize if heavy rainfall is expected.
- Applications can be made at the ½ -1 lb nitrogen rate and should total no more than 2-3 lbs of total nitrogen per 1000 square feet per year.
- Calibrate your spreader to apply accurate amounts. See Simple Spreader Calibration and Simple Spreader Calibration Worksheet and Example Worksheet
- Lightly water in fertilizer (¼ inch or less of water) after application.
- Avoid using rotary spreaders near water or impervious surfaces like roads, driveways and sidewalks, especially if your spreader does not have a guard.
- Sweep up any fertilizer that may land on driveways or sidewalks to avoid fertilizers reaching storm drains. Request your lawn care provider follow this rule too.
- Apply ½ as much nitrogen on older lawns with soils containing a lot of organic matter. Lawns that are 10 years or older have accumulated nitrogen in the organic matter in the soil, which is released providing nutrients to your lawn.
